UPIR ANNOUNCES CLASSES FOR SUMMER EXHIBITION RACES

ESCANABA, Mich. – The management team of the U.P. State Fair Authority and Delta County Commerce center have agreed upon three classes to run the summer exhibition dates after consulting with former board members of the U.P. Racing Association.

With an abbreviated course at the U.P. Fairgrounds totaling 1/8th of a mile, officials decided to find classes that would be appropriate for such a layout. The three classes chosen were small cars, tough trucks/cars and Microsprints.

The small car division will allow any four or six cylinder vehicle less than 192 inches in overall length to compete. This division may feature specially formatted races such as races featuring local celebrities. Safety modifications must be made to the vehicle. A street legal vehicle will not be permitted to run in this division.

Street legal vehicles will be allowed to compete in the tough truck/car division. Tough trucks/cars do not have to be street licensed. Competitors in this class will race only against an s-shaped course and the timing clock.

The fastest division to compete in the three race summer exhibition races will be the Microsprints. Microsprints are winged sprints powered by a 650 motorcycle engine. During the winter the class competes on the ice course in Escanaba.

For more information regarding rules in the three divisions contact Boyd Widdis at 906-450-5112.

The three race series, with dates scheduled for June 12, July 31 and Aug. 31, is designed to gauge interest in local racing and raise funds for a possible reconfiguration and re-surfacing of the track at U.P. Fairgrounds. The goal of the project is to reopen the speedway full-time in 2011.
